The Issue :
All of the toilets in the village of Prolit in Cambodia are shallow squat toilets. These have been designed so that the human waste is disposed of into the ground at a depth of around 1.5 metres. At this depth, the waste can easily contaminate the surface water table and this poses extreme health threats to the local community, especially when they are accessing their drinking water from shallow depths as is frequently the case.
The Solution :
Ablution blocks. Typically shared by 4 households, these blocks comprise of a shower unit and a compost toilet, providing on average 15-20 people with a hygienic sanitation solution.
They dispose of and recycle human waste far more effectively and hygienically than squat counterpart. The human waste from the toilets is fully composted and then used as a rich fertiliser for local agriculture.
The Goal :
MaD for Good (Making A Difference For Good), our partner organization in Cambodia, will provide the village of Prolit, in the Siem Reap District, with a hygienic sanitation solution that does not contaminate the local water supply through the construction of ablution blocks. MaD’s sanitation facilities are an organic and sustainable way to contribute to soil fertility and food security amongst rural communities.

Did you know…
The provision of clean & hygienic latrines has been shown by a UN study to be the best way to increase school attendance among girls (UNICEF 2008)
“…diarrhoea caused by poor sanitation is killing many more children than HIV/Aids, tuberculosis and malaria combined.” (BBC, 2009)
Improving sanitation in developing countries typically yields benefits of $9 per $1 invested (UN Water, 2008: http://esa.un.org/iys/docs/2%20fact-sheet_economic%20benefits.pdf)
This funding goal is for the construction of one unit. If successfully funded we will post additional projects by MaD with the goal of supplying the whole village with sanitation units.
